Chronic pain and chronic illness affect far more than the body. They can shape a person’s mood, identity, relationships, coping abilities, and progress in treatment. This engaging CE course helps clinicians better understand the complex connection between chronic health conditions and mental health, including the ways persistent pain and illness can contribute to depression, anxiety, trauma responses, grief, and treatment barriers.
Training Objectives:
- Describe how chronic pain and/or illness can impact our client’s mental health and overall wellbeing
- Learn about how CBT and ACT can be useful modalities for this client population.
- Learn and encourage clinician new skills to teach and implement with clients to manage their mental health while managing their pain and/or illness.
- Learn how stress can affect illness/ pain and how to manage using modalities.
Instructor:
Alix Reilley, CMHC is uniquely qualified to provide a one-hour training on chronic illness through both her professional expertise and lived experience. As a therapist who personally lives with a chronic illness, she brings a deep understanding of the emotional, psychological, and practical challenges that individuals face when navigating long-term health conditions. This perspective allows her to bridge clinical knowledge with authentic insight, creating a training that is both compassionate and relevant.
In her professional work, Alix has facilitated therapeutic groups for individuals living with chronic illness, helping participants process grief, adjust to life changes, and develop coping strategies for managing ongoing symptoms and limitations. Through this work, she has guided many individuals as they navigate the complex emotional journey that often accompanies chronic illness—including loss of previous abilities, uncertainty about the future, and the need to redefine what meaningful living looks like.
Drawing from both her therapeutic training and firsthand experience, Alix is passionate about helping others move through the acceptance process, build resilience, and learn practical ways to cope with the realities of chronic illness. Her approach emphasizes validation, self-compassion, and adaptive strategies that support individuals in living fulfilling lives within the circumstances they face.
