Specific phobias can significantly disrupt daily life, relationships, work, and overall well-being, yet they are among the most treatable anxiety disorders. This engaging CE course equips clinicians with the knowledge and practical skills to accurately assess specific phobias, understand the neurobiology underlying fear responses, and apply the EMDR Standard Protocol to both trauma-related and non-trauma-related presentations. Participants will explore evidence-based assessment strategies, case conceptualization, and treatment planning to help clients move beyond avoidance and toward lasting recovery.

Training Objectives:

  • Differentiate specific phobias from other anxiety-related disorders using DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, prevalence data and evidence-based assessment tools.
  • Explain the neurophysiology of phobic responses, including the roles of the amygdala, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, autonomic nervous system, conditioning, habituation, and inhibitory learning, and describe how these mechanisms inform EMDR case conceptualization.
  • Apply the eight phases of the EMDR Standard Protocol to the treatment of trauma-related and non-trauma-related specific phobias, including target sequencing, cognitive interweaves, future template development, and integration with graded exposure when clinically indicated.
