Eating disorders and mental health are deeply interconnected, but too often they are treated as separate conversations. In clinical practice, they show up together every day: clients navigating body image distress, anxiety, trauma responses, obsessive thoughts around food, emotional dysregulation, and restrictive or binge–purge cycles that often function as coping strategies rather than isolated symptoms.

Eating disorders are complex, multifaceted conditions that extend far beyond food and body image. They reflect a dynamic interplay between biological vulnerabilities, psychological processes, and socio-cultural pressures, often presenting in ways that are both varied and clinically challenging to differentiate. Understanding eating disorders also requires a clear grasp of how diagnostic frameworks such as the DSM and ICD conceptualize and categorize these conditions, as well as how treatment must extend beyond symptom reduction to address underlying cognitive, emotional, and relational factors.

Identify and differentiate at least 5 different types of Eating Disorders.
Discuss biological, psychological, and socio-cultural contributions to Eating Disorders.

Discuss co-occurring disorders and common psychological comorbidities in Eating Disorders.
Describe a multi-modal treatment approach, including individual, family, group, and medical interventions.
